Student wins second place in Welding at SCC Throwdown

KHS student Kash Elston won second place in the Welding Tech Stick Skills Challenge at the Southeast Iowa Skills Throwdown hosted by Southeastern Community College on March 22 at the West Burlington campus.

To compete, Elston had to read and follow blueprints to make finished pieces by stick welding. There were points awarded for proper welds and visual appearance of finished pieces.

Several KHS students participated and additional Throwdown categories included Auto Tech Pit Crew Challenge, Computer Aided Design Autodesk Battle, Construction Tech Blueprint Build-out and Machining Measurement & Re-Engineering. Participants were also able to network with trades and industry representatives.

Welding is part of the Career and Technical Education program at KHS, and students can take Welding I and Welding Capstone/Engineering from instructor Katie Geltz. Students also participate in the Industrial Tech Club.
