Three Keokuk High School Seniors have been invited to participate in an awards ceremony for the Scholastic Art and Writing Contest at the Belin Blank Center for Talented and Gifted Students at the University of Iowa. This year, over 200,000 students competed in the national contest. Past winners have included Andy Warhol, Truman Capote and Richard Avedon and other world-renowned artists and writers.
Marc Wharton was awarded Honorable Mention for his drawing “Split”. The detailed pencil drawing depicts a monstrous mirrored image of man’s head being split in two. Marc also received First Place for another drawing at the Keokuk Fine Arts Council High School Art Show. Upon graduating, Marc plans to attend Iowa State University and study Physics.
Kori Lambert received Honorable Mention in Digital Art for her work titled “Dreams Within Reach”. Kori took pictures of her friend then combined and manipulated them until she had an inspiring composition Kori has been accepted by the University of Iowa and will major in English and Digital Media next year.
Angel Rose won Honor Mention in Photography for her photograph “Garden Owl”. The monochromatic photo was taken in her grandparent’s yard and shows a brown picket fence that leads up to a wide-eyed statue. Angel plans to go into Health Sciences at Indian Hills Community College.
