The end to summer vacation at KCSD was marked by the first Back-to-School Bash held Monday, Aug. 19, at Rand Park. Modeled after the Block Party hosted in years past by Keokuk Middle School and Keokuk High School, this year’s Bash welcomed all families and students in the district and is planned to become an annual tradition.
“It was a great evening, only made possible with the support from school staff and community members,” Kathy Dinger, KCSD superintendent, said. “Even the weather cooperated. KPride was alive and well!”
KCSD teachers, administrators and board members were all on hand to welcome attendees and help serve over 900 hot dog, hamburger, and cheeseburger meals generously supported by AIM Credit Union.
Students and their families met their teachers who provided yard games and activities, and visited with the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, Keokuk Police Department and Keokuk Fire Department. Several other local organizations also attended and provided activities and met with students and families. Face painting was provided by the KCSD Elementary PTO and a mini petting zoo was made possible by Laurie Mendenhall, a school board member. Several KHS students were also on hand to host games and activities.
Following the Back-to-School Bash, families headed to open houses at each KCSD school building where students were able to find their classrooms, walk their schedule, meet with teachers and drop off school supplies.
