Mini Grant brings Sunshine Circles to classroom

Back in October Mrs. Huls applied and was awarded a mini grant in the amount of $294 from the Keokuk Community School Foundation for the purchase of manuals and supplies for Sunshine Circles in the Torrence classrooms.

Sunshine Circles is a research based program used to encourage and promote healthy, positive connections between staff and students which increases student engagement and overall positive behaviors within the classroom.

Sunshine Circles is a school version of Group Thera play, a type of interactive therapeutic play that allows students to feel secure and valued, to get along with others and to feel part of a community. These play groups produce remarkably quick connections among students and between students and teachers that result in trusting relationships and warm classroom communities. Congratulations Mrs. Huls and Thank you Keokuk Community School Foundation.

Les and Jane Fowler Memorial Teacher Grants

The Keokuk Community School Foundation is proud to announce that once again Mrs. Roberta Fowler Tong has generously donated $4000 to the foundation to be used for teacher grants for the 2020/2021 school year.

Mrs. Tong established the Les and Jane Fowler Memorial Teacher Grants in honor of her parents, Les and Jane Fowler. Mr. and Mrs. Fowler were active in the Keokuk community for over sixty years in a variety of capacities, always with a focus on education. Roberta Fowler graduated from KHS in 1969 and after graduating from the University of Iowa, went on to become a middle school and high school English teacher in California. Her own two daughters are both elementary school teachers. Supporting and nurturing education has been a priority in the Fowler family for generations.

This year, the Les and Jane Fowler Memorial Teacher Grants provided ten practicing KCSD teachers funding for programs and/or materials designed to encourage and improve student success and growth. Funds can be used to purchase equipment, technology, software, books, flexible seating options, diversity/racism/gender equity materials, teacher training materials, supplies or any other options that add depth, accessibility and dimension to learning.

After reviewing a wide variety of many quality project applications, the Keokuk Community School Foundation board members selected the following teachers to be the recipients of the 2020/2021 Les and Jane Fowler Memorial Teacher Grants:

Jennifer Bruce, Nancy Folluo, Kristopher Hayes, Danielle Boyd, Courtney Giesel, Lisa Magliari, Kristie Hayes, Kendall Mitchum, Angie Miller and Travis Miller.

The Keokuk Community School Foundation depends on the generosity of the alumni and friends of Keokuk Community School District to financially support ongoing projects in the classrooms, arts and music departments and on the athletic fields. The Foundation is sincerely grateful for all donations that are received, as they do make a positive difference in the education of the students of Keokuk Community School District.
