Congratulations to the Keokuk High School musicians who have been selected to perform at the 2015 All-State Music Festival. Tommy Allen, Beth Congdon, Wes Hunt, and Holly Noneman have all attained the highest individual honor available to Iowa high school musicians by being selected as members of the 2015 All-State Chorus, Band, and Orchestra. This is both Beth and Tommy’s second year auditioning for the All-State Chorus, but first year being selected. Tommy was selected as a Tenor I and Beth was selected as an Alto I. Only 75 students are selected for each voice part for the All-State Chorus. This is Holly’s third trip to All-State, once in the orchestra and twice in the band, including this year. Wes was selected in 2014 to the All-State Chorus and this year to the All-State Orchestra.
The 2015 Festival will celebrate the 69th anniversary of this prestigious event. District auditions for the each of the groups were held Saturday, October 24 at six different locations across the state. The southeast Iowa regional competition was held at Washington High School. High school musicians from Davenport, Iowa City, and all of the smaller cities and towns of southeast Iowa competed in the southeast regional. Approximately 17% of the students who audition are selected for membership in the All-State ensembles. Participants will rehearse in Ames on Friday and Saturday, November 20 and 21, and the Festival Concert will be presented to the public at 7:30 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum on the Iowa State University campus in Ames Saturday evening. Iowa Public Television will record the concert for re-broadcast. Please check the IPTV website (www.iptv.org) for the exact dates and times. This program is under the auspices of the Iowa High School Music Association and the Iowa Music Educators Association.
In addition, the following five Keokuk High School freshmen all recently received the huge honor of being selected for participation in the thirtieth annual Opus Honor Choir Festival; Philip Dunlap, Austin Derr, Piper Walden, Joshua Pollitt, & Corgan Ball. This is Joshua and Corgan’s first year being selected, Philip and Austin will be attending for their second time, and this is Piper’s third year in a row being selected for this incredible honor. Connor McGinnis and Chris Killoren were also selected as alternates. Connor was selected last year and Chris was selected the past two years.
The 9th Grade Mixed Honor Choir guest conductor is Julie Schnieders, Retired choir director from Indianola High School. The 2015 Opus Honor Choirs will perform at 4:00 p.m. November 19th in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium in the Iowa State Center in Ames. The Opus Honor Choir Festival is under the auspices of the Iowa Choral Directors Association, Inc.
Also, Kendra Hunt (7th), Cameron Muston (8th), Kaleb Leffler (8th), & Austin Smith (8th) all recently received the highest honor a Middle School vocal music student can receive by being selected for participation in the thirtieth annual Opus Honor Choir Festival. Over 3,000 students were nominated by their directors for 720 positions in the four Opus Honor Choirs. Selections were made by means of a recorded audition. Guest conductors of the choirs include Douglas Poppen, North Fayette Valley Middle and High School, West Union, 7th & 8th Grade Bass Clef Honor Choir & Hannah Ryan, Johnston High School, Johnston Community Schools , 7th & 8th Grade Treble Clef Honor Choir. The 2015 Opus Honor Choirs will perform at 4:00 p.m. November 19th in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium in the Iowa State Center in Ames.
