KHS/KMS Science Fair Participants Awarded at State Competition

On March 28th, 2014, the 57th Annual State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa took place in Ames, IA at the Hilton Coliseum. Over 700 6th-12th graders registered for the fair and $70,000 of prizes and scholarships were awarded to students. Keokuk had a total of 39 students competing at the fair: 21 7th and 8th graders, and 18 9th-12th graders. Ms. Arie Schiller is the Science Club sponsor and KMS Life Science instructor. She is assisted by Mrs. Sarah Hawkins, KMS Earth Science instructor. Below are the awards that Keokuk students received:

  • TEAM Evy Merydith and Jerry Glenn: 3rd place in Eighth Grade Biological Sciences (out of 66 projects) receiving $20 each and a medallion; Broadcom MASTERS award given to the top 10% of exhibitors in Middle School
  • TEAM Brandon Boltz and McKenzie Horton: 2nd place in Senior High Behavioral and Social Sciences (out of 15 projects) receiving $35 each and a rosette
  • TEAM Taylor Dunn and Malorie Maerz: Honorable Mention in Senior High Energy and Transportation (out of 9 projects) receiving a rosette; Iowa State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Scholarship receiving $500 each; Iowa Biotechnology Association Scholarship receiving $2000 each
  • Kelby Kies: Honorable Mention in Senior High Medicine and Health (out of 16 projects) receiving a rosette; The Surgeon General’s Special Award
  • Priya Khanolkar: 2nd place in Senior High Medicine and Health (out of 16 projects) receiving $35 and rosette; Grand Honorable Mention receiving $500 and a medallion; SSTFI Finalist receiving an all-expense paid trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, CA ($2,000 trip); Dedication to Scientific Excellence (six year award) $100 and plaque TEAM Madison Pfaffe and Blake Wade: Iowa State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Scholarship receiving $500 each
